Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a neurological disorder that makes it difficult for a person to read, write, and spell in a manner consistent with their intellectual ability, despite having had adequate instruction.

  • A good understanding of new concepts
  • A large vocabulary for age group
  • Talented in solving puzzles or building models 
  • Strong comprehension of stories read aloud 
  • Strong thinking/reasoning skills
  • Especially knowledgeable in a particular area of interest
  • Excels in an area not dependent upon reading
  • Noticeable resilience and ability to adapt

  • Delayed speech
  • Mispronounced speech (baby talk)
  • Trouble with rhyming
  • Difficulty learning letters and their sounds
  • Failure to understand how words come apart or divide
  • Reading errors that indicate guessing
  • Complaints about reading
  • Confusing the order in words (cimmanon for cinnamon)
  • Speech that isn't fluent and includes frequent um's 
  • Difficulty finding an exact word; confusing words that sound alike (lotion for ocean)
  • Inability to give a quick verbal response
  • Difficulty with rote memory
  • Frequently skips over small "function" words such as that, an, in, the, of
  • Disastrous spelling
  • The inability to finish tests on time
  • Reading that is slow and tiring
  • Labored handwriting
